Help a child be a lifetime learner
United Way of Fort Smith Area is committed to educating our communities about the importance of the early years to future success in school and life. The healthy, positive time spent with children lays the foundation for a lifetime of growth and learning. Studies show that when kids are given regular ‘lap-time’ not ‘laptop’ time, but time spent reading books before kindergarten their vocabulary can reach 10,000 words before age five. For a child who hasn’t had this experience, their vocabulary is about 3,000 words.

More than 50% of the children entering kindergarten in Fort Smith perform two to three years behind the developmental norm. It is also known that families living in poverty have less than 10 children’s books in the home. It sounds almost too simple to be true, but by reading with a child regularly during their early years, they not only enjoy a great story, they also learn some basic pre-reading skills. United Way’s Women’s Leadership Circle is partnering with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to target at-risk children. Each month a new, age appropriate, carefully selected book will be mailed in the child’s name directly to their home- FREE!

The first book will arrive in 6-8 weeks, after that, each child will receive books monthly up until his or her fifth birthday. It's never too early to prepare children for success in school - and in life - by reading to them every day!

Individuals and/or organizations that are interested in sponsoring a child for the Imagination Library project should send their donation of $30 to: United Way of Fort Smith Area, P. O. Box 2300, Fort Smith, AR 72902.
