UNITED WAY VOLUNTEERS CONTRIBUTE OVER $60,000 IN VOLUNTEER HOURS TO THE COMMUNITY

(April 13, 2016, FORT SMITH, AR) –—Over 800 volunteers joined forces to serve at organizations that improve lives in our communities. Volunteers completed projects from Ozark to Poteau and Van Buren to Booneville. United Way Board Chairman, Dr. Lee Krehbiel with UA-Fort Smith spoke, at the kick-off breakfast at Golden Corral, on the importance of volunteers to the United Way, saying “This day would not happen if it were not for the many volunteers and companies that allow their employees to volunteer”. There were over 90 projects in our six-county area which includes, Crawford, Franklin, Logan and Sebastian counties in Arkansas and LeFlore and Sequoyah in Oklahoma. United Way President, Eddie Lee Herndon announced at the breakfast that the value of the volunteer hours from today adds up to over $60,000. Golden Living, Arvest Bank and Ozark Public Schools had the largest number of volunteers for the event with a combined 220 volunteers.

All of the agencies were very thankful for the volunteers and the hours they put in. Jerry Glidewell with Fort Smith Boys and Girls Club said, “All the volunteers participating did a great job…they brought their “A” game complete with a bright spirit of optimism.”   Jerrod Burns with Ozark Area Youth Organization said, “We were very pleased with the turnout of volunteers for United Way’s Day of Caring. The community support in the Ozark area is great! We had over 80 volunteers at our complex and at the Ozark Retirement Center”. Projects completed today ranged from visiting with the elderly in local nursing homes through Project Compassion to helping the clients at Abilities Unlimited cook a meal for the volunteers for lunch. Projects also included, painting and clean up at the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts facilities in Bonneville, sorting food for the food pantry at the Community Services Clearinghouse, and the list goes on.
